I simply inserted the SD card that had the photos on them from the old phone to the new phone so nothing in the photos changed at all. In at least the first 2 times it happened, I didn't copy the photos from the old phone to the new phone. This all just happened on my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. Is there a way to stop this from happening over and over again? I can't keep spending hours and days deleting google's mistaken duplicates, and now it seems I can't even use the app to automatically backup new photos because then it tries to sync and delete the photos on my phone. Hmm I wonder if google drive is doing something to the photos stored there and makes google photos think they're new photos? I've got them both saving original quality photos so seems like it shouldn't. Google drive works fine but google photos is a complete disaster.

GOOGLE PHOTOS FIND DUPLICATES ANDROID
On the google photos website I deleted some of the "duplicate" photos, then the android app tries to sync and delete the actual one existing photo on my phone! In addition to it being annoying trying to find photos, it also takes up 3x more space than I'm actually using. So now I've got who knows how many thousands of photos duplicated in my account. It had already uploaded 100 or so years old photos and videos to "today".

27,344 items left"!!!! It started uploading all of the photos on my phone AGAIN!!! I stopped the app at that point. Well that seemed to get the photo dates back showing correctly in the timeline, but then it showed "getting ready to back up. I read that I could delete the cache and data from the app and it might fix it. Some were off by years! I looked at the photo details/names and they were of course the correct dates but google photos had them moved all over the place in the timeline. Google photos started showing the wrong date labels for both the moved photos and thousands that hadn't even been moved. Yesterday I moved a few thousand photos into different folders and it got worse. It has also happened several times where I'll move photos to a different folder and google thinks they're duplicates and tries to reupload them even though the photos were already uploaded when they were originally taken. I know people here and google says that google won't upload duplicate photos but it clearly has happened to me repeatedly and for 10's of thousands of photos. In years past they've been on an SD card, but now Samsung has eliminated SD cards so they're on local storage, but they are all 100% exactly the same photos-same name and location and never changed or edited, and some files going back over a decade. This is the third or fourth time over the years that I've gotten a new phone and google photos duplicates some or all of the photos that were on my old phone and are still on my new phone. I know there are dozens of similar thread here so I'm adding mine in case anyone from Google actually pays attention.
